JEWISH HOME AND CARE CENTER

Application

Placing yourself or a loved one in a nursing facility can be a difficult decision. When spouses, family members or even the resident themselves decide to come to the Jewish Home and Care Center, you can rest assured that you or your loved one will receive the best nursing care available in an elegant setting overlooking Lake Michigan.

Quality Care
At the Jewish Home and Care Center, the resident is in the center of a circle of caring that includes their family and friends, physicians and medical professionals, and the professional caregivers of the Home. Residents and their family members are invited to take an active role in the residents care plan; and family meetings are scheduled on a regular basis that include the resident. Unlike a hospital or acute care setting, staff at the Jewish Home has a unique opportunity to form a long term, therapeutic relationship with the individual.

Nursing Services
The Jewish Home and Care Center is staffed twenty four hours a day by dedicated nursing staff that includes: Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nurses Aides and Restorative aides. The staff works closely with the resident’s physician to treat existing conditions, identify and treat any emerging conditions, and maintain accurate records in the medical chart. The nursing staff at the Home is trained in intravenous therapy, total parental nutrition, enteral nutrition, Wound and Ostomy care, and state of the art equipment to perform bladder scans. Offering sophisticated care with a personal touch is a hallmark of care at the Jewish Home and Care Center.

Social Services
Every unit at the Jewish Home and Care Center has a social worker that welcomes each resident when he/she is admitted. The Social Worker helps the residents become acclimated to the unit, assist them in their adjustment and address their emotional needs. The Social Workers are liaisons between the facility and the family; they communicate with the family on a variety of issues such as insurance coverage, resident progress, facility practice as well as discharge planning when the resident is ready to return home.

Activities
Activities are offered during both the days and the evenings for the resdients. They include entertainment, arts and crafts, music therapy, exercise, gardening, ceramics, special events and celebrations. These may be in large or small groups or even one on one.

Food Service
Nutritious, attractive food is important for the recovery and well being of the residents. On each floor residents are served on linen tablecloths in a dining room overlooking Lake Michigan. Kosher food is prepared and served under rabbinical direction to assure that Kashrut standards are met. A Certified Dietitian assesses each resident for nutritional needs and, if necessary, develops a plan to assure that those needs are met.

Inpatient and Outpatient Therapy Services
The Jewish Home offers comprehensive Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy services in our state of the art conveniently located therapy department which overlooks beautiful Lake Michigan. Our therapy center is designed with a fully functional kitchen, laundry, bedroom and training bathroom to assist our clients to regain skills for independence at home. Our hydrotherapy pool offers opportunity for specialized treatment. Rehabilitation therapy assists residents in returning to their fullest capabilities after illness or surgery.

Helen Bader Center - Dementia Care
The Jewish Home and Care Center has long been a national leader in dementia care, receiving attention from professionals from around the world. The award winning newly redecorated Helen Bader Center offers a home like environment with all of the support of our care giving team. At the heart of the Helen Bader Center is Monya’s Garden, a beautiful rooftop garden. Daily activities are planned to nurture the creative abilities that those with memory loss retain. The Helen Bader Center features two family units of 12 residents each. Since dementia is a progressive disease, the Jewish Home and Care Center has developed an end stage dementia program that includes small groups and 1:1 sensory therapy. The Rabbi provides spiritual support to both the family and the resident.

Pastoral Services
The Pastoral Services Department features a full time Rabbi and a part time Rabbi. Daily and Shabbat religious services are held in our beautiful chapel and are attended by Home residents, as well as residents from the surrounding neighborhood, including the Golda Meir House. Holiday observances include religious services in the chapel, as well as celebrations such as Seders, Chanukah, Purim Sukkot. Those residents who are not Jewish have full access to the religious leader of their choice, and regular ecumenical services are held in the Home’s activity department.

The Pastoral Services Department also supports the Caring Partners Volunteer Program, which has been recognized by the Last Acts Foundation as a model program for end of life care. The Caring Partners Program provides specially trained volunteers when desired by the family, for those nearing the end of their lives at the Home. The Home also works with a variety of local hospices to provide in-house hospice care when desired.

Kosher Oasis
The Kosher Oasis is a dairy restaurant located just off the lobby of the Jewish Home and Care Center. This innovative addition allows the residents the pleasure of “eating out” without ever leaving the building. Many people in the community regularly support the Oasis bringing with them children and friends that add another dimension to the lives of the residents.
