HISTORY
Our
history dates back to 1906. There was a growing and deep concern regarding
the void that existed in the care of the elderly Jews and the hope was that
finally a special place could be established to meet their needs. Through
the dedication, vision, compassion, charity, donations and selflessness of
our founders and supporters, we have been able to provide services going far
beyond what anyone could have considered possible.
Changing its name to incorporate collaborations and changes, The
Jewish Home & Care Center is our
foundation. The home was established in 1906 on Galena St., moving to 50th
St. in 1930, and finally locating at 1414 N. Prospect Ave. in 1973. While
the Home's mission of care and caring for the Jewish elderly of Wisconsin
has never changed since its genesis, the shifting of demographics, the
increased knowledge regarding senior wellness, and the explosion of medical
technology has repeatedly forced the facility to seek new ways to ensure the
highest level of care and caring.
The Helen Bader Center (established
in 1993), and Chai Point (established in
1994), continues our heritage to provide quality services and serve each
individual, couple and family with respect. The Board of the Jewish Home and
Care Center made plans to expand our services into the North Shore area in
1998. A major gift for the acquisition of the new location was received by
the family of Sarah Chudnow in her memory of caring and compassion in the
Jewish community. This new campus, the Sarah
Chudnow Campus will open its doors in February of 2005.
As we expand our team of friends, volunteers and contributors, we will
remain true to our character. We are a place where Jewish families can
celebrate the festivals together. We continue to be a place where Jews,
regardless of their level of observance can feel comfortable and welcome. We
bring tribute and respect to our senior elderly. We dedicate ourselves to
furthering the wellness of every resident at every stage of life.
